When It Rained Meat in Kentucky: The Wonky ‘Meat Shower’ of 1876

Weather forecasts usually involve rain, snow, or the occasional hailstorm. But in the spring of 1876, residents of a small Kentucky community experienced something far stranger: chunks of meat falling from the sky.

The bizarre event—now known as the Kentucky Meat Shower—remains one of the oddest incidents in American history.

A Strange Rainfall

The story began on March 3, 1876, near Olympia Springs in Bath County, Kentucky. According to contemporary reports, a local farmer named Allen Crouch’s wife was making soap outside when pieces of flesh suddenly began drifting down from above.

Witnesses described small chunks of meat—some as big as two or three inches across—floating down like flakes of snow. The mysterious shower reportedly lasted several minutes and scattered meat across an area of roughly 100 yards.

Naturally, the event attracted immediate curiosity from neighbors.

People gathered the strange material and attempted to determine exactly what had fallen from the sky. In a moment that sounds like it came from a very different era of scientific investigation, at least two men reportedly tasted the meat and concluded it resembled either venison or mutton.

Scientists Step In

The mystery soon reached newspapers and scientists around the country, who tried to identify the substance.

Several samples were sent to laboratories for analysis. One scientist suggested the material might be lung tissue from a horse or human infant, while another thought it resembled muscle tissue from a deer or sheep. Needless to say, the explanations did little to make the story less unsettling.

Eventually, a more mundane theory emerged.

The Vulture Explanation

One widely accepted explanation involves vultures—specifically a species known as the turkey vulture, which has a rather unusual defense mechanism.

When startled or threatened, vultures will sometimes vomit the contents of their stomachs to lighten their bodies and escape more quickly. Researchers proposed that a flock of vultures flying overhead may have collectively regurgitated their meal at the same moment, causing the strange shower of flesh.

While the explanation may not be as exciting as a supernatural event, it fits surprisingly well with the evidence. Turkey vultures are common in the region, and their feeding habits could easily produce chunks of partially digested meat.

A Legend That Won’t Go Away

Nearly 150 years later, the Kentucky Meat Shower still fascinates historians and fans of strange events.

The incident has become a staple of “weird history” collections and remains one of the most frequently cited examples of bizarre phenomena reported in the 19th century.

And although science may have provided a plausible explanation, the idea that meat once fell from the sky over rural Kentucky continues to capture the imagination.

Because while strange weather happens all the time, it’s not every day that the forecast calls for a chance of meat.
