Mars has delivered plenty of strange photos over the years—rock formations that look like faces, shadows that resemble animals, and the occasional optical illusion that sparks alien speculation.
Now, a new image from NASA’s Curiosity rover has some internet sleuths wondering if the Red Planet has added something else to the list: a flying saucer.
The image, recently captured by the rover during its ongoing exploration of Mars, appears to show a disc-shaped object hovering in the sky above the planet’s dusty landscape.
At least, that’s how it looks to some observers. Supporters of the UFO interpretation say the object resembles a classic flying saucer shape—smooth, round, and seemingly suspended above the Martian horizon. Skeptics, however, are not convinced.
A Case of Martian Trickery?
Planetary images are notorious for producing optical illusions. Strange lighting, dust particles, camera artifacts, and oddly shaped rocks can easily combine to create objects that look far more mysterious than they actually are.
In this case, some observers believe the “flying saucer” may simply be a small rock or piece of debris caught mid-air as the rover snapped the photo.
Others suggest it could be a camera artifact or a trick of perspective. NASA has not suggested that the object represents anything extraterrestrial. Still, that hasn’t stopped internet UFO watchers from zooming in on the image and debating what it might be.
The Long Tradition of Martian Mysteries
Mars has a long history of fueling the imagination.
From the famous “Face on Mars” photographed by NASA’s Viking spacecraft in 1976 to countless odd shapes spotted in rover photos, the Red Planet has repeatedly provided material for both scientists and conspiracy theorists.
In most cases, the explanation eventually turns out to be far less dramatic than alien technology.
But every once in a while, a strange image pops up that gets people wondering all over again.
And until someone proves otherwise, that mysterious disc hovering in the Martian sky remains one more curious entry in the ever-growing catalog of “things that look suspiciously like UFOs in space photos.”
